Kashmir National Day 24th October

Kashmir National Day 24th October

This year the local authorities of Britain will for the first time celebrate the anniversary of the formation of the Azad (free) Government of the State of Jammu and Kashmir on 24th October as “Kashmir National Day” along with the local British Kashmiri community.

This historic initiative has been taken by Kashmir Development Foundation (KDF) a national charity working for the empowerment of the ‘Voice’ of the Kashmiri diaspora community. The KDF has asked selected local authorities in partnership with the local Kashmiri organisations to celebrate the historic achievement of Kashmiri people: the formation of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Government on 24th October 1947 by hoisting the flag of Kashmir on the roof tops of their local town halls or civic centres in recognition of the Kashmiri diaspora and their contributions to the local economy as well as to civic life in England.

Sardar Aftab Khan Executive Director of KDF said “I am thrilled that we have been successful in our campaign and a number of local authorities are formally supporting the celebration of ‘Kashmir National day’. There will be so much activity surrounding Kashmir National Day this year across England. I’d like to thank Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and Oldham Borough Council for their tremendously positive response to our Campaign – they have been excellent partners and with them I hope we will reach many hundreds of people. I’d also encourage all charities and public and private bodies to consider partnering with us next year to make ‘Kashmir National Day’ Celebrations even bigger and better.”

Shams Rehman, Director of Kashmir Development Foundation and vice chair Oldham Kashmiri Association has welcomed the support of Kashmiri social, cultural and political organisation and said “ Kashmiri diaspora community has demonstrated their unity in celebrating Kashmir National Day and we will continue to achieve more in future with the help and support of the community. As part of Kashmir week a special ceremony will be held on 23rd October at Oldham Town Hall in presence of Oldham Mayor Councillor Olwen Chadderton to celebrate Kashmiri heritage and national identity.”

Councillor Daalat Ali, Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Councillor and coordinator Aalmi Pahari adabi Sangat said “I am delighted to support and take up the request from KDF to hoist Kashmir Flag at Rochdale Town Hall. All the Councillors, Leader and the Mayor of Rochdale were very much supportive of KDF request and the Rochdale Council has taken the lead to formally agree to fly Kashmir flag at Rochdale Town Hall. The Mayor of Rochdale – Councillor James Gartside will fly the Kashmir flag at a special ceremony at 10:00am on 24th October.”

Members of the community, councillors and representatives of Kashmiri social, cultural and political organisations such as Almi Pahari Adbi Sanghat, Peoples Voice, Asian Literary Forum, Kashmir Self Determination Movement, Kashmir Forum, Kashmir Freedom Movement (KFM), Jammu Kashmir Muslim Conference, Jammu Kashmir Muslim League (N), JKLF, Jammu Kashmir Liberation League, Azad Kashmir People Party, National Liberation Conference, JKNAP, JKPNP, elected members, community dignitaries and local community organisation’s representatives will be attending these ceremonies.

Haji Mohammed Javed, President KFM (Rochdale Branch) said “there is lot of enthusiasm among Kashmiri youth, women and elders and this ceremony will help the Kashmiri community to celebrate their national identity in a dignified and meaningful way”.
